Kauf eines A5 in England
Hallo,

OOOps!! Slipped into Dinglish!
Watch the Exchange rate EURO/PFUND carefully! (at the moment who knows!!?!!) Dubia struggling? Yes there is a risk!
My car was converted in the UK to UK legislation (from LHD) Speedo swapped, extra nebelscheinwerfer rear and scheinwerfer changed! UK registered (Uk tax payed) then driven back to Germany and put back to normal condition and registered!

Why all that hassle?
Audi Germany brochure price 45 000 Euro, Total! price payed 26 405 GB Pounds (money transferred March 2009 @ 1.08) is just over 28 500 Euro, thats why! I am also Scottish therefore tighter than a Ducks Arse!

Oh! I guess you did save 4% VAT, but did't it cost more than that to convert everything back and forth? The easier way would've been a taxfree purchase and direct export.
Unless you got a much better discount this way, did you?

The KPH zifferblatt was in the boot as was the original lights (adaptive?). 60 Euro at local dealer for Mph to Kph conversion did the lights myself. Do not know what Tax Free are offering as a discount but I got 8-9% with local dealership plus the 4% tax and the exchange rate killing. The price I quoted was the price on the road with conversion charge and delivery (picked up at Milton Keynes). Due to a hiccup in the registration Audi UK also payed my flight and Hotel when I picked up the car.

Sounds like a heck of a deal. When did you pick it up?
Are there any other requirement for the registration in the UK? Primary residence or at least an address? Minimum time the car has to be registered in the UK?
Even after the VAT increase in January it would still be a 1,5% saving. Audi Tax Free offers a non negotiable 4% discount (it used to be up to 10% at the beginning of the year), supposedly dictated by Audi UK. I'd have to find out, if the discounts went down in general.
Also, some members on this message board are saying that no other dealership than Audi Watford can order LHD cars, do you know anything about that?
Would be great to get more details.
Let me know what Audi has to screw up, I'd like my travel expenses to be paid by Audi as well.😁

What I don't quite understand is how you can transform your RHD to LHD ? it must require a lot of technical know how and how much is the cost, compared to the 500 £ surcharge applied by Audi UK ?
Regarding this LHD feature, it is quite strange that not all manufacturers apply this surcharge. I get a quote for the new Skoda Superb Estate in the Elegance execution and there is no surcharge for LHD. Idem for my order of a NIssan GT-R, I pay the UK price without any extra cost for LHD. It seems that Audi UK wants to earn some extra money, as they see that the exchange rate and the UK price are too favourable for us, living on Continental Europe.😕

Audi itself does not charge a LHD fee. This fee is only incorporated by Audi Watford, which is an Audi franchise. Supposedly it's a lot more work to order a LHD😕

I checked with other Audi dealers just for sake of comparison, they all told me that there is only one dealer able to make tax-free sales and with LHD features, but I am not so sure that it is not Audi UK which levies this additional "tax".

It's a "fee". And - you don't have to believe me.
But I'm sure of it, since I asked them and they admitted to it.

Ok I see, they are quite greedy !😠
I ordered my LHD Audi from the local dealership in Scotland, all done over the telephone. The salesman thought that the speedo reading on KMH through the colour display was good enough to get the car registered (WRONG!!!) and he thought that the headlight adjustment for continental driving was also good enough (WRONG!!!) apart from that I used my family home address and payed 500 GB pounds for the conversion to RHD LEGISLATION (vehicle needs MPH indicated on speedometer(can be both MPH/KPH) and the lights need to be pointing in the other direction). The car is a German model that is converted (as I have explained) at Milton Keynes and a Uk Type approval issued. The car was issued a UK registration like any other UK car and then driven straight to Germany using the free seven day Audi insurance cover. Once in Germany I waited for the registration papers to arrive (one week- as it had to be sent first to my family address in the UK). Then nipped down the strassenverkehrsamt produced the papers and it was angemeldet (number plates needed to be handed in). NO ZOLL! problems as Tax is paid only once in European Community.
I do not imagine that the dealership that I dealt with would EVER touch another LHD order, but Watford would (ie. Tax Paid if you have a UK address that you could use, after all they know now it is possible to do!!?
Dunk.

Well I guess it's quite a bit of work going through all of this, if the car really has to be registered in the UK - maybe not really worth it. What sucks is that Audi Watford cut the discount more than in half and keeps charging a LHD fee, but the paperwork is very plain and easy.
Thanks anyway for all of your answers.

Sorry.
