X5 vs Q7

BMW X5 E70

Hi folks

First of all please allow me to apologize for not writing in German, but being danish living in the Netherlands my German is most probably a lot worse than your english!!!
And - being Danish I could not find a forum "back home" since these cars cost in excess of 160.000 EUR in Denmark, so - here I am hoping that you will reply anyway (in German of course) .

I am currently driving an almost 10 year old Audi A6 avant 2.8 Quattro, and will be ordering a new car within the next 3-4 weeks. For a long time I was sure that it would be the Audi Q7 3.0 tdi, but then the new X5 came along. Having looked at both, testdriven both, compared them endlessly etc. I am not a lot further. The X5 clearly has the better engine (especially the SD!), but the Audi has the larger interior (7 seats and still a bit of boot-space, or 5 seats and a large boot).

I have been around on the Q7 forum as well and found a few problems mentioned, but have not been able to find anything negative about the X5 so far. Are you all that happy with your cars (or just VERY loyal to the BMW brand!!), or have I just not managed to come across the less positive bits.
And - am I really the only one looking at and comparing the 2 cars trying to find the better of the 2?

The X5 I currently use to compare with the Q7 (Daytona-grey) is space grey, sd engine and with the M-package.....

Looking forward to reading your comments.......

Was für eine Steilvorlage! 😉

Hi Thedane,

the most important differences you have already mentioned: the 7 seats in Q7 and a little more space, but is this important for you? On the other side you have appr. 20cm more length what is not so funny when parking. May be that the rear camera and the navigation from Q7 is also better than in the X5? I don´t know.

The X5 has a much better design in my opinion, engine, gear box, excellent!

I did drive an AUDI before and think you may be lucky also with the Q7, but I never look back to an Q7.

Wish you the best choice (X5).

Den sd mit dem 3.0 des Q7 vergleichen?
Dann fällt die Wahl leicht!
Aber jetzt mal im Ernst:
1. Frage: brauchst Du sieben Sitze?

Beides letztendlich feine Autos. Hör auf Deinen Bauch!

thedane,

asking this question amongst a bunch of X5 maniacs, all following answers should naturally be pretty pro-x5.

coming from touareg, I was first determined to get a q7 - 7-seater and loved the space it provided compared to the VW. what I did not like about it was the backside looks.

fortunately, before confirming the q7 order, I saw the new x5 at our local dealership, which caused me to immediately change my mind. I was thrilled by the dynamic look (did not even know about the "feel"😉 - and in the end even skipped the 3rd row! honestly, I believe that the space both of them provide is not much different.

the x5 is definitely the more dynamic, younger, exciting car, the Q7 might seem a bit more mature, but in reality it is not.

so, if you want a direction: pick the X5!

good luck!

Hi Thedane and welcome!

Think you answered a lot of your questions yourself...

If you need the trunk, like extreme spacious seating and the car being more retrograde/square-edged and more common in the interior design – take the Audi!

If you like a car being more progressive (esp. in the interior) and much more sporty with set-backs on a “chunky appearance”, take the BMW. As stated before by others, THE driving machine is supposedly the BMW.

Concerning your questions of negative experiences (though I am the wrong one to report yet) we discussed this issue in another thread: it really seems as if people don’t experience too much of downsides / problems with the X5 so far – thank god! Which is the reason for some of us discussing about exhaust pipes, wheel designs and the pros and cons of the professional sound system… However, some negative issues have been mentioned - check the corresponding threads for details - e.g.,:

  • gearing problems with the car being cold for safer warming-up phase of motor
  • lousy quality of rear-view cam
  • gas consumption not comparable with advertised consumption figures (SD = on average approx. 11l / 100kms)
  • prices of supplementary equipment
  • restricted connectivity with some mobile phones (esp. the newer models - prob' the same as with Audi)
  • for some of us: limited suspension comfort (too sporty), even with "Active Driving"
  • problems with battery support, losing it's power and resetting car system one in a while
  • breaks tend to squeaking

... well, that would be it, I guess. Some two or so extreeemly unlucky drivers experienced a break-down and had to be towed away, however the reasons are not clear yet.

So you gotta make up your mind on your preferences – good luck and enjoy this process… I actually think there are quite a few people in the same situation like yours, comparing X5 + Q7 and ML (Mercedes), maybe also Cayenne.
Take care - X5_Newbee

Hi Thedane,

very warm welcome!!
Choose the X5.
We´ve tested the X5, Q7, ML, Touareg and the Lexus Hybrid. The X5 is the newest car - the driving and the motor´s are breathtaking, the technological functions are without problems and overlooking this blog there are no serious problems with this car - X5 Newbee has even told you!!!!
Our decision was made after the first two corner´s with the 3.0D, our main argument was the driving!! Just try it!!
We´ve driving this car now since 10/07 and my wife is thinking about the X6 as our 2.car (only for her!!!😠) – greetings to Bildchef!!!!!!!

Hi
Well, one more thing to consider:
Service.
Due to the fact, that all our local VW/Audi dealers provide everyone with the same VW-Polo / Skoda Fabia service, I acctually never considerd buying the Touareg or Q7. Our two local BMW dealers actually make you fel like a valued customer, not like someone applying for social securety when you come in to shop for a car in this price range....
best regards
Chris

PS.: If its space your looking for, look at the LandRover Discovery. More space than the Q7 and smaller external dimensions. Actually, I did sit in the 3rd row of a Q7 when it came out. If i recall correctly, it had even less head room than the X5. But the Disco would be the only one, where normal adults can use the 3rd row anyways. But then the Disco's top speed is limited to 180 km/h and that's no fun on the Autobahn (but ok in the Netherlands and Denmark...)

Hi everybody - thanks a lot for all your comments!

I did of course expect a lot of support for the X5 for good reasons (handling, sporty characteristics, looks etc.)......

Indeed the choice is not between a good and a bad car, but rather where the emphasis is. We need a big car to take us up and down the Autobahn between NL and DK, and there the Q7 clearly offers better space. We also occasionally could use the 7 seats, which the Q7 offers without loss of boot-space. In the case of the X5 the boot is smaller (even smaller than the one in my stone-age A6...) if I order it with the 7-seat option.....

Looks - the X5 looks fantastic, and I agree that it looks a bit more sporty than the Q7, and as one of you wrote especially the rear of the Q7 looks a bit heavy.
On handling I thought that they both handle easier than my A6 - very easy to drive and not at all the feeling of being in such a big car. I did however notice that the suspension on the X5 is much harder and therefore less comfortable than the adaptive air suspension on the Q7 - again a matter of where the emphasis is.

I will keep on reading, but must at the same time admit (before I turn around and RUN FOR MY LIFE !!!) that it will possible end up being a Q7 - no offense guys, I am sure the X5 is also a super car!

Will let you know once a decision is made.....

In this case I have to admit, I'll vote for an immediate road tax for Danes passing Germany on their way to The Netherlands... 😉😁

Hi dane,

i think there is no need for a further roadtax for somebody having to register a car either in DK or NL. buyers of expensive cars are already punished by taxes when registering such car. heavy in NL but even worse in DK nearly tripeling german listprice.
back to topic i fear that we are goind to loose you to the audifraction. despite all other points Q7 together with GL offering biggest space of all SUVs but i would never take it due to this tankish looking front. i just saw one on the street: too high front, too round, sorry not my taste.
if you have to take 7 adult people from DK to NL time to time there is no other choice because in an X5 you don't need any stereo as people from 3rd row will scream and shout all the time.

😉

Cheers!

Michael (caughing as hell and swallowing pills against throatpain...and will make myself out of the dust soon...😉 )

Na Michael,

better english from the cows(Q7) or from the big boy´s (X5)???😁😁

hasta maniana folks!!

Michael, wenn du einen richtigen Doc brauchst - komm, ich kann schneiden..........

Gents - if I may...
The written English is equally impressive on both threads!!

And just to let you know - I have asked for help on countering the threat of special tax when passing through Germany......will of course let you know what the Q-people can come up with on that one!!
