Engine goes to 3-4000 rpm just on its own

Hello,

Can someone help me out here ?

I have a car here, Golf II 1.6 cat. from mid 1991, which is still in perfect condition.
However, it has had the following problem regularly over the past 14 years and I have still not found a VW dealer who is able to solve the problem entirely :

Without any visible reason, the car sometimes increases rpm just on its own initiative. This means: when just driving at 60 km/h, it suddenly accelerates to 100 km/h. No need to say this is rather dangerous...

Does someone have any idea what the cause is ?

Ist doch schön, wenn unsere englisch-sprechenden Freunde bei uns die Hilfe bekommen, die sie benötigen. Ich würde mich ja schließlich auch freuen, wenn man mir in einem englisch-sprachigem Forum helfen würde. Aber genug davon, dies sollte auch nicht als Kritik zu Theresias' Posting verstanden werden (bevor er mich noch schlägt 😉 )
