What is this for?

Audi A4 B7/8E

Hi,
Can anyone tell me what the following are for (see picks, red circle)? I can’t seem to find their description in the user manual. One is a switch on the climate control panel; the other is a flap that sits behind the rear view mirror. On the side facing the windscreen there is a small hole, which seems to emit a red light (not to be confused with the ambient lighting).
The car is an Audi A4 Avant 2.0 TDI 170ps, date of manufacture 12/06.
Sorry my written German is not too hot, but I can read it.
Thanks.

Referring to your initial question: might be sensors for the ambient lighting system. Dunno if that system was already part of the B6/B7 series though.
As for the first picture: as already posted by others, with these three buttons you can manually control the airflow. Upper button means that the air con emits all air through the windshield emitter nozzle (pretty effective in the summer when you've parked your car in bright sunlight and want to cool it down quickly - cold air will descend towards the floor thus effectively cooling down the car), mid button will enable you to dry your hair if the fan is set to full power (;)), lower button means all air is distributed to the floor area. You can also combine all three buttons as required.
Thanks for driving a german car, mate. Cheers. :)

Thanks Biggun (Bet you say that to all the ladies) ;)
As for driving a German car, well German engineering is still the best in the world; even if I do think they took the day off whilst building my car :(
You English?

Sorry, but I don´t see a red light in the area you´ve show.
There is not a LED or another bulb in this area. I think that the light you see is a little from the amibiente light.

No AF, Its not on. But you can see the hole from where it comes? Is it the same as yours?

;)

Nah, just kidding. Couldn't resist posting that.

:D

Must have been a Monday when they built it. Happened to me with my previous car. Sometimes you're just out of luck I guess.

You English?

Nope, I'm one of those ugly Krauts.

:D;)

No, thats not the same. I can make tomorrow a picture from my light sensor, if you want.

muhhaa n1,
You said that, not me :)
Excellent English, it was the slang that had me fooled.
As for 'Monday' cars, I think the 'Meister' at our local garage has driven more KM's in my car than I have.
It’s unfortunate really, because when you buy a German car you do expect quality and exceptional craftsmanship. I’ve got a car that produces more ‘gelbe Zettels’ than pleasure. But, hey, maybe they are only teething problems.....

Thanks AF,
I've got to go to the workshop tomorrow anyway because my car is broken again.... so maybe the 'meister' can tell me.... heh maybe not :)

OK, you can write me, if you need still a picture.

Yes, I did. And I did it on purpose.

:)

A stereotype ain't worth jack if you don't cultivate it, don't you think?

:D:D:D

Well, thanks.

:)

Another reminder I spend way too much of my spare times reading through english message boards. *sigh*

Man, I feel for you. I had an A3 before and that bitch gave me crap all day long. In the end the engine blew up after 7 years and 140k km, eventually giving me an excuse to buy a new car. The one I have now is pretty solid though (lucky me). Then again, if you wade through the loads of complaints posted in the 8K area here, it makes you want to buy a Lexus.

Another one of those stereotypes...yet one that works in our favor.... ^^

But, hey, maybe they are only teething problems.....

I should hope so.

:)

Cheers Biggun,

I live in hope.
