Lampentausch Standlicht
Hallo,

Hi Oaci:
You can change the parking light yourself, but it is a bit of a difficult task to get access to the parking light if you have a V10 or W12 powered Phaeton. It is easier to get access to the light on the 6 and 8 cylinder Phaetons, because they have smaller engines.
There are two different strategies that you can follow to gain access to the back of the headlight:
1) Remove the front bumper cover, then remove the headlight.
2) Remove the airbox that contains the engine air filter, then you can just reach right in and change the light.
The first procedure, removing the bumper cover then removing the headlight, is the "simpler" procedure, in the sense that it does not require a high level of technical skill. But, this procedure takes quite a long time to carry out. There are full directions (with photos) for removing the bumper cover and the headlight posted on the English language Phaeton forum, at this link: Retrofitting Dual Xenon Headlamps.
The second technique, removing the engine intake airbox on the affected side of the car and then reaching in to change the bulb, is much faster (30 minutes total time to remove and replace) but requires that the technician doing the work has 'great familiarity' with the Phaeton... in other words, that he or she has removed an airbox before. I don't have pictures to show you of this technique, but it goes like this:
a) on the affected side, remove the air intake scoop that is located behind the top of the radiator.
b) disconnect the big plastic tube that leads from the air intake plenum (the box that holds the air filter) to the throttle body of the car.
c) Remove the top cover of the air intake plenum (same procedure as used to change an air filter).
d) Locate and loosen the screws that hold the bottom half of the air intake plenum (the airbox) in place, then remove the lower portion of the airbox.
You can now reach in and easily change the light bulb - any light bulb.

Here is a picture that shows the part (the air-scoop that leads from the top of the radiator to the entrance of the airbox plenum) removed. As you can see, it is very easy to get access to all the light bulbs when this part is removed.
The part is held in place by three screws. It takes about 2 to 3 minutes to remove it the first time you do it, but only 30 seconds to remove it once you are familiar with the process.
Before you attempt to replace this part, put some Vaseline (white petroleum jelly - same stuff you buy at an apotheke) on the end that fits into the airbox. This will make it MUCH EASIER to wiggle the part when you have to align the three screw holes with the top of the radiator support bracket.
Installing the part takes about 5 minutes the first time, then only 2 minutes each subsequent time. When you are installing it, look at the identical part on the other side to see exactly how it fits into the bracket at the top of the radiator - it is not intuitive.

Here is a photo of the opposite side of the same car, showing what the air scoop looks like before it has been removed.
You only need to remove the three screws that are shown. After you remove the screws, you need to "fight" with the plastic part to wiggle it out... so, this job is easiest to do when the engine (thus the plastic part) is quite warm, in practice you do the work after you have been driving the car for a while. Do not attempt to do this work in the winter when the part is cold or it will probably break.
Thanks to the staff at my VW dealership (Volkswagen Richmond Hill, in Canada) for letting me take the service loaner Phaeton apart to take these pictures. The process is the same on a W12. We don't have diesel Phaetons in Canada, thus I cannot say if it is the same process on your car.
