Cornering lights always on with latest software update

BMW 3er G20

Hi,

I have just had my G20 320D updated with software 03 / 2020.40, and now I see that my cornering lights are always on when headlights are on (not when only daytime running lights are on). I have the headlights with extended features (not laser and not the standard LED).

Anyone noticed same issue?

It just became part of the City Light
It should turn off above 60kmh ~ 35 mph

So here is the picture, where you see that the cornering lights are on, when lights are set to Auto. Before I had this software update cornering lights only turn on when below 30 km/t and activating the turn indicator. Now both of them come (like permanent fog lights). Not sure if this is an error of something BMW decided to do in their latest software update.

Interestingly enough, if I deselect the Auto light switch and instead select low beam manually (there is a switch for that) they dont come on, which makes it even more strange, as if this was an intended feature, they should come on regardless. There is not a separate button or option to configure the Cornering lights anyway to my knowledge. It is software coded.

Those of you who have Cornering lights in your BMW G20 or G21 do you experience the same? If so I assume it is deliberately by BMW, but if not, they need to fix it. Appreciate you input

I've got the softwareversion 03/2020.30 installed and my G21 shows the same behaviour... I think its normal because the corner lights should on lower speed make a wider illumination.

How do I know if I have that feature of cornering lights?

If you see my picture in an earlier post you see that there is a small square light towards the inner side of the Headlight lamp. THat is the cornering light. Its not part of the standard LED headlights - you need to have the adaptive or laser lights

Do I quailfy for it? This it how my car looks. The two little one below are ON.
The car setting is automatic, it was a bright day, the enigine running, I conclude these are on all the time.
The car was built in March 2020 for Germany.

You have the standard LED headlights which doesnt have cornering lights. What you have ON are the daytime running lights. If you compare to my picture in the post eaerlier, you will see that my daytime runining lights look slightly different (curve a bit)

I just checked the lights just for help you, my car has the cornering on either, and it is assumed to be the normal German version.
But I don't recognize it as disadvantage, since more lights.

But then it’s not a cornering light anymore. So what’s happen when I’m turning ??

Okay, it still gets confused since BMW has weird headlight configurations.

dynamic cornering light - the lowbeam turns with your steering wheel input left - right at any speed,
when driving within city limits the driver side headlight also moves out to the left side, doing so the potentiel luminated area infront of the car gets more spread -> better visibility

static cornering light - is the light we can see on those images postet earlier, those get activated when using your indicators below a certain speed or wheel input. They have a specific angle they can iluminate - lets say 65° to your left and 65° to your right. Helps to see pedestrians when making a turn at intersections or help seeing things in slow tight turns.

NOW the fun part - car manufacturers which are using the Hella Control Units (Audi, Porsche, VW ...) got this feature working allready since ~2016
They call it - "intersection light" - BMW now takes use of that too. The "static cornering light" turns on when you approach a intersection, it knows that because your Navigation Headunit provides data for that.
All BMW now does a little different is the fact that they use that niffty little feature and turn it on even when you are just standing oder rolling slowly down the road - doing so, you allways have the most possible light output infront of your care without blinding others.

It can or may differ a little depending on what navigation headunit you are using. Atleast it does so within the Volkswagen/Audi ecosystem. With that said only the cars with the highest aviable navigation headunit can use the "intersection light", the ones with the lower speced units don´t provide the needed data for that to work - those cars usually have the static cornering lights on between 5 - 45 km/h

It should turn off when you move the Lightswitch to manual low beam, but then theres a good chance that your "dynamic cornering lights" wont turn with your wheel input.

None or less i dont see a malfunction with them lights on - it just provides better visibility.

So far my knowlege

All that you can apply to EU regulations, I worked a while in North America and you guys got some weeeeeird car-light regulations, it could just be that. Asuming you are from that area 😁
