Wie altert oder verschleißt er schneller? Durch hohe Laufleiistunng oder lange Standzeit mit wenig km?
And how do I get to check it at all? He is not as accessible as the
Fan belt.
Unclip the upper edge of the timing belt cover and pull it forward (towards the right side of the car). But you won't see more than a short section of the belt unless you remove the engine mounting and the belt cover. And then you're halfway to replacing it anyway. Belts can wear and degrade from both use and standing still, which is why Volvo set both mileage and time intervals for replacement.
But the cause of failure is often as much the pulleys as the belt itself. Or the auxiliary belt can fail and jam the crank pulley, or wrap itself around the timing belt. That is why the belt kit comes with new pulleys.
Yes, the belt will "probably" last longer than the recommended change interval, because Volvo set the interval to try and ensure that nearly all belts will still be serviceable when they are replaced. Would you prefer it if they gave you a 50/50 chance that your engine might be wrecked before a new belt was due? How will you know how long your belt might last once the time or mileage are exceeded? ;-)
