I'm fully aware of the situation - been in VAG group for 3 years on IT decade ago.
Regarding HW you're right - chosen HW seems "suboptimal", but software wise there are too many layers.
Similar situation is couple of years on PC with Windows 7+ / web-applications - too much overhead through abstractions / indirection and theese days not so many people understand what's going under the hood/hardware wise.
I tried to look at how data was organized in VW MIB3 map update + little bit into firmware with decompilation and after couple of hours I've thrown my glove onto the ground. Been expecting little bit more professional/industrial approach. Thats the reason for my "rant" up there.
On one of previous project 1 collegue has been working on RaspberryPi2 and his QT C++ UI and while playing video animations it was hyper-smooth with almost zero lags.
Even modern Android phones with in comparison Super-Fast (C/G)PUs and lot of RAM are lagging - layers of bloat across the path...
