My impression is that as soon as the inner of the car is colder than the selected temperature of the climate system it starts and thereby help reaching the desired temperature faster - but that´s just a guess based on experience with around 10 different BWMs.
The warm air starts coming at once - long before the engine is warm enough to produce warm air on its own.
