Ersatzteilmarken / Hersteller und deren Qualität

Themenstarteram 12. April 2011 um 20:49

Hi,

@Spechti:

Danke dir vielmals falloutboy! :)

Stichwort: Peace of mind.

Now MADE IN MEXICO.

http://www.nastyz28.com/forum/showthread.php?t=215850

@falloutboy

Zitat:

Look for a RAYBESTOS Part # 4251004. There is a big difference. The raybestos part was supperier to the MOOG even if you exchanged it for the MOOG. Much thick castings.

push??

Auf vielen Teilen steht mittlerweile wieder "Made in USA". Aber das muß noch deutlich mehr werden...

Na hoffentlich stimmt das auch immer. :rolleyes:

This is the first of what I hope to be many detailed reviews of reproduction parts for second generation Camaros.

Warning. These reviews will not be 56k friendly.

The discussion that led to this analysis can be found here: Link

I want to state up front that all opinions are my own. I do not work for (or have any affiliation with) a vendor, or a reproducer, nor anyone else in the automotive industry. I wasn’t paid to do this and I didn’t receive anything else for it. I did it because this site has been incredibly helpful to me and I want to help those people who are in the shoes I have been in, where I was overwhelmed by choices and didn’t know what to do because of a chorus of people that I didn’t even know who were loudly proclaiming that “all reproduction parts are junk.” I assure you, they aren’t.

The Goal

The goal is to perform an objective analysis of reproduction parts (repop parts) by various manufacturers to confirm their fit and function and prove or disprove the assumption that all reproduction parts are faulty, worthless, or otherwise junk. To perform this analysis, I will post a review (as objectively as I can) along with images of the parts that provide further details. I will also toss in a few thoughts I gather along the way of doing this analysis.

On with the review!

Test Subject

Today's review is for an RH Parking Lamp Bezel made by OER.

OER Part# 459154

OER Name: CAMRO STD PK LMP BEZL-RH

Made in Taiwan

This part is sold by many vendors and will fit any Camaro from 1978 through 1981. I bought this one from Rick’s Camaros (Part #702310) in November 2011 for $37.99. (This is important as I have seen price increases since 2004, when I first started purchasing items.) The OER sticker has an “OER Code” some other numbers, which I assume are lot numbers and may reflect the date of manufacture.

Control Group

The control group is the original RH Bezel taken from my beloved 1978 Camaro, which has been stored in a sealed garage for most of the last twenty years.

Side-by-Side Comparison

The image below shows a direct, side-by-side comparison of the two bezels. I included the original box to prove it’s OER, then realized that that doesn’t mean anything since it could still be NOS. I assure you, it isn’t! (My NOS cost 3 times as much and looks way worse than this OER.)

http://stillvisionstudios.com/.../..._RA_RH_ParkingLampBezel_scale.jpg

This image made me realize that it wasn’t a true comparison because the OEM item was dirty and the lens housing was still in it, so I removed the housing and carefully cleaned the bezel, using only my fingers, lukewarm water, and a gentle hand soap.

In this image, you can clearly see some odd coloring on the original bezel, particularly towards the rear, right up near where the lens housing would sit. All of this discoloration is visible when the housing is installed.

The OER bezel is clearly shiny and new, but it is difficult to tell from these pictures just how cloudy the original bezel actually looked. Therefore, I introduce you to the Montross Reflectivity Test. In this clearly scientific test, you can see the reflection of the Mandalorian Montross in the bezel itself.

The pitting, cloudiness, and dullness of the original bezel is fairly evident.

http://stillvisionstudios.com/.../Bezel_Compare_scale.jpg

More comparisons.....

http://stillvisionstudios.com/.../..._RA_RH_ParkingLampBezel_scale.jpg

http://stillvisionstudios.com/.../..._RA_RH_ParkingLampBezel_scale.jpg

As subjective commentary, all I can say is that if my bezel looks this badly after being stored indoors for 20 years, I assume the ones stored outside must look pretty rough, most of the time.

Weight Comparison

I need to get a digital scale for future reviews, but using a standard kitchen scale this is roughly what I am seeing:

Original Bezel 3kg (est)

OER Bezel 2.5 kg (est)

By touch, I could not tell any weight difference between these two items. I was actually surprised at the results on the scale, but there it is. The extra weight isn't dirt because I cleaned the original one as well as I could before I weighed it. The difference is fractional at best and I can’t even speculate as to what is causing the difference. I even measured the thickness of the plastic and its virtually identical on both items.

Measurements

Measuring these was more difficult than I anticipated, but I did my best to measure across the same spans to be as accurate as I could be.

Subjectively, these appear identical in size, but I wanted to actually measure them to see if they were as close as they looked. I took more measurements than what is shown below, and all I can say is that in most cases, these were a few hundredths of an inch from each other. In many cases, they were within a few thousandths of an inch from each other.

http://stillvisionstudios.com/.../...A_RH_ParkingLampBezel_M_Scale.jpg

The only real difference between the two was the distance between the two mounting tabs, where the distance in the Original Bezel was slightly thinner than the OER Bezel. Looking directly down at the bezels, it’s obvious the Original Bezel’s tabs have been slightly been in towards one another.

(Edit. After posting this review, I placed the lens housing back into the Original Bezel and screwed it in so I could return it to its storage box... I then realized WHY the tabs are bent slightly inwards. The lens housing is thinner than the tabs (duh) and when you attach the housing, the tabs on the bezel bend slightly inwards as you snug the screws down. So there you go, that explains the difference. Over the years, the older bezel has conformed to its assembled shape.)

I should note that the old lens housing mounted into the OER Bezel with absolutely no problem. However, it did look like crap. More on that later.

Fit and Function

This is where the rubber meets the road. I see absolutely no reason why this wouldn’t be a functional replacement for an OEM item that has been broken, chipped, or looks cloudy.

I cannot test this in a front bumper because I don’t have one with me yet. Based on the measurements I did, there is no question that the screw holes would line up, etc. (The holes would have to be pretty far off for it to cause a problem.) Based on the placement of the screw hole and the size of the bezel overall, I can see absolutely no reason that this wouldn't fit. In fact, if it doesn't fit, that would likely be an issue with the front bumper and not this bezel.

The original lens housing fits into this OER bezel with no problem. It looked bad though... really bad. The interior reflector of the original lens housing is not as shiny as it should be and a quick glance made it readily apparent that something about the parts were just "off." Basically the new bezel made the old lens housing look extremely dirty. In my opinion, if you are replacing your bezel, go ahead and get a new lens housing. (I’ll do a review on that later too, after Christmas.)

Conclusions

Based on the scientific evaluation criteria (that I made up off the top of my head while I was supposed to be working), I would say these two items are essentially identical in every meaningful way.

To further illustrate that not all Repop parts are junk, I have some NOS parking light and headlight bezels somewhere and I will do an additional comparison with them, once I remember where I put them. As a spoiler alert, I will tell you that the NOS items cost a fortune, but look like crap in comparison to this OER replacement. The box they came in was sealed, slightly dusty, and not damaged, but my first thought after opening the box was, “These look like crap….”

I cannot yet say how this item will withstand Texas summers and Texas winters, but I will do a follow-up in a few years and we will see how they held up. If it survives a few years here, it will probably be fine where you are.

Recommendation

I would absolutely purchase this item again, no question. At $40 each, it’s not cheap. Wait for a 20% off sale and go for it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I will add a further edit to this post (or more likely, a new review) after Christmas. I have the OER replacement lens and hardware, but these are supposed to be Christmas presents and according to my better half, I am not allowed to open any more presents without her approval, which I apparently do not have. LOL
I have also been instructed to return this OER item back to its Christmas wrapping and that it had better look the same way it did before I jacked with it.
If you can think of other evaluation criteria or have other parts you would like me to evaluate, please let me know.
If you have any questions, please let me know!
