Backyard Workshop - Fiat Punto I

This is my first ever attempt at a blog. Inspired by the film Julie and Julia, I thought why not try it out. Experiences gained by backyard repairs should really be shared so that others don't have the same problems I have encountered.

Einleitung

Purchase Checks

The little red car is a 1994 original and with only 35000 Km my first thoughts were that the Tacho (km counter) had been fiddled with and right enough the tell-tale sign of the speedo needle jitter was as large as life. However, the car's bodywork told another story which to me indicated the excellent condition of the car itself. No dents, original factory stickers still on the back axle and inside the engine compartment and a somewhat dusty interior was enough to convince me it was indeed original. Here goes with the roadtest. It was perfect but another roadtest some 6 months later told another story.

 

One by one I shall tackle these jobs and report in this blog how they went. The car is worth it and although not even 20 years old, it is becoming a rarity on the roads. Let me know if you have hints for these jobs or if you find the information useful.

Seat covers look very bad now after a the younger generation has used it for 4 months.

Nowhere to put cans, cups or anything. The glove shelf cannot be used as the 1990's design using all plastic means whatever is put on the recess slides into your lap on the first left turn (yes, I'm in Europe).

Antrieb

Starting the car after about 7 days proved the battery was old and more than likely just slotted in by the garage (where I bought it) so it would turn over on the day. Don't you love dodgy sales! A Saab battery has been fitted, especially good for the winter.

 

Red console indicator which looks like a sort of sparkplug or injector lights up, but has no effect on the running.

Revs sometime move upto 1.7 but after moving off revert to nominal behaviour.

Windscreen washer doesn't work, another huge minus in winter and can even fail the inspection on this one. There is water in the bottle :-).

At idle, something is vibrating at the front end, pushing the clutch in decreases the noise but only moving off really helps.

 

Clutch, exhaust, tyres, motor and bodywork is in running order without any damages.

  • - The petrol guage needle after the half way mark goes down very quickly

Fahrdynamik

Wheel-wobble at 80km\h.

 

No servo and front-wheel drive means it's extremely heavy on steering unless you're moving. Who needs the gym work-out anyway!

Once moving at over 50km/h, the steering is dangerously light, a flaw in the design department.

Komfort

Electric window on the driver side was faulty (replaced motor by the garage I bought it at .. posisitve point here)

Driver door loose.

Radio cassette doesn't work.

Headrests cannot be removed easily ..ie. installing seat covers might be tricky.

Now in the winter, I checked the heater out. The fan only works on setting 3, which is noisy!

Emotion

No handbook or manual. Internet sources at Fiat does not have any reference, which perhaps it should do for older vehicles.

  • + Subtle curves give the bodywork a more dynamic appeal
  • - it's still not far from the old Ritmo shape

Gesamtfazit zum Test

Aus diesen Gründen kann ich den empfehlen:

If you take on a car like this then you know that repairs and maintenance are going to be needed. Spares should be readily available still and not too pricey.

The car is still in the tuning bracket so add-on bits can be installed at a leisurely pace.

The Punto has plenty of room for passengers, also tall ones! I'm told that the ride in the back is quite ok too. Being essentially a small car, and with the asynchronous back seats it has more transport use than you'll need.

Town driving is a pleasure as it's quick plus, if you keep to under 100Km/h, it's relatively quiet on a run.

As a cruiser, the car is not to be recommended. Heavy steering means a lot of armstrain, which can be dangerous in certain circumstances. Again, the steering is a problem when moving quickly as it is too light, not for the faint hearted if the tyres have been given more air to counter the heaviness at parked position which negativly causes the car can dance in bends.
